As a longtime animal rescue volunteer, I am writing to inform LJN readers that pet ownership is a huge commitment—emotional, physical and financial. Vet bills (even just regular checkups) can be thousands of dollars per year, including deworming, vaccines, dental cleanings, anal gland expression if needed (sorry for the “ick factor,” but it does happen), etc. Puppies especially need extensive training (also expensive) to ensure appropriate behaviors—while they are adorable, they can cause a lot of damage if not properly trained. Dog food can also cost hundreds of dollars per year. Dogs need to be walked multiple times per day, regardless of the weather, Shabbos or Yom Tov, a new baby, or how busy their owner may be. They typically do their business while walking, and it is the owner’s responsibility to pick up their droppings, every time.

Community members, please understand this: Pets should NEVER be adopted on an impulse without carefully considering whether you are fully ready to commit to caring for them for their entire lifetime. Far too often people get a pet, keep it for a few weeks/months until the novelty wears off, and then try rehoming or selling their pet. Changing homes and owners, especially multiple times, can be traumatic for pets and can cause long-term behavioral issues.

Anyone who os seriously considering adopting a pet, please contact a reputable animal rescue, who can endure that you have the detailed knowledge needed to be a prepared pet owner. Thank you for your consideration. 🐾
