Construction has started on a 6.5-acre park off Fenwick Road, the city’s first significant recreational project in 20 years.

“It’s going to introduce an asset to the city that we don’t currently have,” Mayor Susan Infeld said. “It’s the type of amenity most people would expect to find in a community of homes, such as ours.”

In August, City Council hired Cavanaugh Building Corp. of Copley Township to build the park. To pay for it, voters approved a $1.8 million bond issue in November 2014. Property owners will repay the debt over 15 years, at a cost of about $25 a year on each $100,000 of home value.

The city has listed the streets it plans to have repaired in 2016.

At the City Council meeting held Monday, council approved legislation to allow Mayor Susan Infeld to seek bids for the road repair work which, in some instances, will also include new curbs added to streets.

“The streets we chose are the ones that need work the most,” Infeld said. “We have budgeted $1 million for the work. We have 32 miles of roads in University Heights and we try to repair as much of them as we can every year.”

University Heights police arrested three teen boys suspected in two burglaries after a University Heights woman walked in on the trio ransacking her home.

Police said the teens burglarized homes on Silsby and Lansdale roads Tuesday.

A cool $1 million will be set aside for road paving projects in the city’s 2016 budget, which includes a projected $13.1 million General Fund.

It’s part of a $2.3 million surplus that will be carried over into the new year, although that number could go higher, noted City Finance director Larry Heiser as he was closing the books on 2015.

The city’s Board of Zoning Appeals maintains that the main distinction between “summer day camp” and “summer day care” is one of semantics.

Over the summer, the city received complaints on four of eight known day camp operations run out of homes around town, pertaining to noise and supervision.
