The Mitzvah of “Duchening” – Birchas Kohanim By Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff

In Parshas Naso, the Torah teaches about the beautiful mitzvah of Birchas Kohanim, wherein the kohanim are commanded to bless the people of Israel. This mitzvah is usually referred to by Ashkenazic Jews as “duchening” and by Sefardic Jews as Birchat Kohanim, or occasionally as Nesiyat Kapayim, which refers to the raising of hands that the kohanim do in order to recite the blessings.

An Appeal for Donations to Cover the Medical Expenses of Yonathan Linder
Dear Cleveland Residents,
I’m writing to you today to ask for financial support, emotional support or both.
As some of you know our son Yonathan, 25, had brain surgery for his severe epilepsy at the Cleveland Clinic in 2013, and recently another brain surgery. This surgery is not done yet in Israel. He has an implant called RNS that will reduce his seizures greatly, or in best case, eliminate them completely. The surgery was done on April 22 and the next appointment is on June 19th. After that he will have to come back to Cleveland Clinic every 6 weeks for 4-6 times, depending on how he will response to the device.

She has made amazing progress this past year at a school that specializes in children with dyslexia. However, the tuition at the school is astronomical, way beyond what a typical family can afford. Her mother writes: “She has just had the best year of her life….She’s feeling great but she is years behind. She can’t go to a regular school, her needs are too great. What we have really been hoping for is just one more year at Jemicy We know she can’t stay there forever but if she could just have one more year of learning, of confidence, of skills building before being thrown back into regular classroom life, it would impact her forever.”
