The Help Betty Stay Home Campaign – Extended

December 20, 2016 7 Comments

Betty(Campaign extended now further to Chanukah. If anyone has any specific questions about her needs, eligibility, etc. then please use the contact info below.)

Betty is an elderly member of our community who is in dire need of help. She has worked hard her whole life and supported two children by herself. She has many serious medical conditions and because she is not able to support herself, she travels by Greyhound bus from city to city asking for donations from local communities.

The purpose of this campaign is to help her to stay home and attend to her medical needs by raising the amount of money she would collect on the road in a year, $8,600 by Passover Chanukah. Please help her by making a contribution and spreading the word. If you would like more info about her or the campaign, please contact Jonathan Frazin at 224-622-8208 or frazinjonathan@gmail.com.

Why do you need a rabbis backing for tzedokoh?

To ensure that it is legitimate. One does not fulfill the mitzvah of tzedokoh giving money to someone who does not need. It is not difficult to call the local Vaad HaRabbinam just to pose the query.

When a Jew; a known member of our community, needs help, you give, not ask rabbonim. If you think the person is “not qualified”, then give a minimum amount.

Betty is from Cincinnati, so if you only give very locally, there’s that. I was told years ago by Rabbeim in Cincinnati that Betty needs and deserves whatever help we can give her.

Betty frequently comes to Cleveland for help. She sits in the front of Unger’s Bakery, K’hal Yereim, or Torah LIFE kollel. If she were able to go door to door people would undoubtedly give freely. It’s embarrassing to see well heeled people throw down a quarter as they walk past. Several charitable people in Cleveland Heights provide shelter for her and several others give her rides. Giving her money is maaser and tzedakah in the purest form.
