(From a community member)
On Monday morning, my car window was smashed and my Tefillin removed from the car. My car was parked behind Zagara’s. No witnesses saw the actual act or anything about the person(s) who did it. A police report was filed at the time. Assuming the thief knew what it was, it is likely a community member will be approached with it. Here is my best description.
1) Standard velvet bag, stylized lions on either side of the luchos. No initials
2) Several pennies had been left in the plastic bag surrounding the velvet one for some time. Even if the velvet bag is removed, patches of green from the copper oxidising should remain. If it remains in the plastic bag there should also be a piece from a paper shel yad cover, with the black worn away in spots
3) Tefillin are in hard plastic case, black and gold. Shel yad needs blacking, if still wrapped as I left it, the strap crossing over from the wrapping around one side to the other should be quite worn and weathered.

There are stories of lost tefillin (mostly at airports and busses) all the time. People don’t realiza how important it is to put an isentifying card somewhere in that bag with a name and number… I know. Our tefillin were once stolen in downtown baltimore. We eventually found them in a trash can on a city street. More than likely thats where yours are too. The thief disgarded them once he realized they were of “no value”!
