This has been an issue for the last couple of years. It was posted on Kashrus websites for a while now. This is just a current update.

The reason the problem has increased over the past few years, is because government regulations on pesticides have stepped up. When the Government does not allow the use of strong pesticides, the presence of bugs increase.

That is why we hear about bug infestation much more now than we used to. We haven’t become “more frum”. The prohibition is as old as the Torah. When one eats even a tiny bug, he can transgress up to six prohibitions at once for each and every bug. (That can be hundreds of “lavim” for one delicious corn-on-the-cob!)

In the earlier generations, before they had advanced pesticides, many authorities warned about eating vegetables.

The K’neses Hagedola (Y”D 84) was very concerned about this. He says that at first he checked his vegetables very well and then ate them. But, after a while, he realized that the insects on the lettuce are too similar in color to the lettuce, and they are so small. So he stopped eating lettuce altogether.

The Kreisi Uplaisi also warns against eating bug-infested vegetables, even after they are checked. He himself says that he refrained from eating raw period.(This is also brought down by the Chida Y”D 84)

The Chasam Sofer (Minhagei Chasam Sofer Hilchos Pesach and Rosh Hashana) only ate vegetables for the seder on Pesach night, and for the simanim on Rosh Hashana. And even then he had a team checking them. Besides for those two times a year, he would not eat vegetables.

Not too long ago, there was an improvement due to the pesticides. Now, unfortunately, it seems we are back to where the earlier generations were.

    Mr. Reader,

Did you click on the link and read what it says there?

If you did, you would have seen that there is a problem with cooked corn on the cob also!!
