New park in University Heights continues to take shape

It would be up to city residents whether they would like to continue a recreational bond issue to fund park improvements at the cleared site of the old Northwood and Fuchs Mizrachi school.

That’s just one of the items left up for discussion after the Jan. 15 public meeting, attended by about 50 people, on the development of the 6.5-acre park.

Goldberg wraps up 12 years on University Hts. council

University Heights Vice Mayor Frankie Goldberg said she “absolutely” would have wanted to continue as a city council member if not for term limits.

“It truly has been an honor and a privilege to represent the citizens of University Heights,” Goldberg said. “These 12 years have gone by so quickly – like the blink of an eye – and I will miss it tremendously.”

Slice of University Square will sell for $155,000, after meager online bidding for five-story shopping center

A five-story, 287,000-square-foot shopping center could be sold for less than the average house, after bidding in an online auction Thursday topped out at $155,000.University Square, a troubled retail complex at Cedar and Warrensville Center roads, is set to change hands after an Auction.com sale that set no minimum bid.

Per minutes from the recent University Heights council meeting, the demolition of the former Fuchs Mizrachi School is three-quarters done and Mayor Susan Infeld said she expects the city to have a park on the site by spring!

Former Fuchs Property – Plan to Develop into City Park

With outdoor recreation in mind, I want to update you on the park that will be located on the former Fuchs Mizrachi School property.    The City has hired Braun & Steidl Architects to facilitate the planning for the future use of this property.   Braun & Steidl Architects have extensive experience in community and park planning and will facilitate the process of designing a park.

Crackdown in University Heights on Using Cellphones Behind the Wheel

Police in University Heights are cracking down on people using their cellphones while driving.

The city’s new ordinance states no one can use a cellphone to talk or text behind the wheel.

A driver is allowed to use a voice-operated or hands-free device.

For a first offense, a person will be fined $100; a second offense $250; any others after that will be fined $500.

People in violation will start being cited on July 15.

City Council voted June 3 to allow Mayor Susan Infeld to sign a contract with Energency Communications Network of Florida for its CodeRED system. The new system will allow local officials to send emergency messages via voice mail, email, text or social media.

University Heights City Council appoints Mark N. Wiseman to vacant council seat

Mark N. Wiseman, a 25-year resident of University Heights (Ed: and member of the Orthodox community), was sworn in as the city’s newest councilman at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, at University Heights City Hall.

In a press release from the City of University Heights dated Feb. 14, and received by the Heights Observer the morning of Feb. 15, Frankie Goldberg, vice mayor, announced the appointment of Wiseman to fill the council seat left vacant by the death of Councilman Thomas A. Cozzens on Jan. 17.

Shaker Heights, University Heights take big step toward merging fire departments

The mayors of Shaker Heights and University Heights have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a council of governments for the purpose of merging the two cities’ fire departments.

Today (Feb. 1), Mayors Earl Leiken of Shaker Heights and Susan Infeld of University Heights said the memorandum lays the groundwork for an agreement that would create a combined fire department.

University Heights City Council Seeks Applications to Fill Seat

City Council is seeking applications from residents interested in filling the seat on council vacated by the recent death of Councilman Thomas A. Cozzens.

The deadline to submit resumes and cover letters is 4:30 p.m. Feb. 1.

They should be submitted to Clerk of Council Kelly Thomas, either by email at kthomas@universityheights.com or by conventional mail at City Hall, 2300 Warrensville Center Road, University Heights, OH 44118.

Cozzens, who served one year on council, died Jan. 17 after a brief battle with cancer.
