Kashrus Alerts – Pareve Chocolate “Chip Blues”

September 1, 2013 Leave a Comment

(O-K)
Whole Foods Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks are no longer certified Pareve. They are certified Dairy when bearing the Circle-K D symbol. Products that
do not yet bear the D are still considered Pareve.
(cRc)
• Kirkland Signature brand frozen Blueberries/Raspberries/Strawberries (sold at Costco stores) bears a BCK symbol and the Hebrew words, “zakuk l’bedikas toloyim”(needs to be checked for insects). The certification is for the processing agents only. While the company checks for insects, this does NOT meet the halachic requirement, and those who require checking on frozen berries will need to check these too. In the future the Hebrew words will be replaced by an English statement: “toloyim inspection required”

Broccolini Checking for Bugs New Guidelines

(cRc)

Due to a recent discovery of increased infestation of insects in broccolini, the cRc has revised its policy on checking it. We now recommend that it must be washed very well with either a vegetable wash or a food grade soap solution, and checked with a chazaka. (See our website) This does not effect the cRc policy on other broccoli products.

This information, including a list of the cRc policy on checking for insects on over 100 different fruits and vegetables, can be found on the cRc website here.
In case you are wondering what all the fuss is about the availability of broccolini or what it is, click here.  Also, it was popular in the kosher world due to its relative ease of checking and low rates of infestation.

Doublecheck Pesach Products for Hechsherim

March 21, 2013 1 Comment

Two problems that consumers should continue to be vigilant about:

1) Products may contain a number of hechsherim, only one of which certifies the product for Pesach. It is not uncommon for the year-round hechsher to be one that is acceptable to a large audience but the one certifying just for Pesach to be one that not all accept (i.e.  Rabbanut of a given small Israeli city, or unknown foreign hasghacha).

2) Especially in supermarket kosher isles, look for the exact same product stocked in both Kosher for Pesach and not Kosher for Pesach forms in the same “Passover” location.

The COR (Canada) provides the following common examples that were found:

Kashrus Alert- Cake and Frosting Reformulations to Pareve

January 27, 2013 Leave a Comment

The following kashrus information is from the COR Detroit dated December 27, 2013.

“DUNCAN HINES MILK CHOCOLATE BROWNIES, which in the past contained cream and milk and stated OU-D on 19.3 oz. boxes, has been reformulated to a pareve formula and now bears a plain OU on new 18 oz. packages. Each box should be carefully checked, because some old formula product is still on store shelves.

Many PILLSBURY FROSTINGS which used to be OU-D have now changed to plain OU (pareve) status, even some with names such as Milk Chocolate, Cream Cheese and Butter Cream. Each container should be checked, because some OU-D product is still on store shelves.”
