The HAC Chinese Auction is this Sunday!

Click to participate: http://www.hac1.org/auction/ or email us at auction@hac1.org.

Hebrew Academy of Cleveland was established in 1943 by survivors of the Holocaust and has educated well over 7,000 students throughout our existence. We are currently in our 74th year of existence with an unprecedented enrollment of close to 1,100 students.

The excellent education provided at the Academy is costly – the average cost per child is $10,000 – and over 75% of our students receive some form of scholarship. However, the longstanding policy of the Hebrew Academy has been to educate all children regardless of background and financial ability.

Please join us in supporting this most worthwhile communal institution with your participation in the Hebrew Academy’s raffle.

The Chinese Auction will be May 21st at the Beatrice J. Stone Yavne High School The Edlis Building.

Rav Nochum Zev Dessler – The Man and His Legacy: A Tribute On His Third Yahrzeit – 18 Shevat

RabbiNZDESSLERBy Rabbi A. Leib Scheinbaum

In Megillas Eichah, the Navi Yirmiyahu laments the sorrowful state of the Jewish People:  Yesomim ha’yinu v’ein av, “We were orphans left bereft of our father.”  The text is enigmatic.  Is it not obvious that if we are orphans we no longer have our father?  We may suggest a practical insight:  When one loses a parent or mentor, the immediate reaction is to focus on one’s personal loss.  Yesomim ha’yinu, we became orphans.  It is all about “us,” the change in our lives.  We are no longer the same.  We have been orphaned.  After some time this sets in and we realize that there is a void in our family– our father is gone, our mentor is no longer with us.  We have been left bereft of our guide, our inspiration, our source of encouragement.  We now lament v’ein av, there is no father.

When Elie Koval was 10 years old, he never realized that Maxine Koblenz, his speech therapist from the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, would be responsible for the positivity of his growth today.

“She got you, the student, involved, in what she was teaching,” said Koval, national accounts manager at MFS Supply in Solon. “She made you feel like you wanted to engage in the work. That’s not easy when you’re 10.”
