The City of Cleveland Heights receives Community Development Block Grant funding and runs an application program for nonprofits who serve low- and moderate-income populations in Cleveland Heights. There is an information meeting June 12th. Nonprofits who are interested can attend the meeting or contact Nancy at the City of Cleveland Heights for more information. It may be worthwhile for those in the Jewish community to learn more about this opportunity. Ohio residents and businesses affected by the heavy rainfall, strong winds and floodingon May 12-13 can apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet announced today.
Administrator Contreras-Sweet made the loans available in response to a letter from
Gov. John Kasich on May 29, requesting a disaster declaration by the SBA. The declaration covers Lorain County and the adjacent counties of Ashland, Cuyahoga, Erie, Huron, and Medina in Ohio.

The Chofetz Chaim (Sefer Shemiras HaLashon II, end of Chapter 6) writes that when a person watches his words, he profits continuously–for each time that he wants to speak, he considers for a moment whether what he is about to say is or includes Lashon Hora, Ona’as Devarim, Leitzanus and the like, and he quashes his desire to so speak.

Whenever Rabbi Yehuda Cohen walked into the Torah LIFE Institute, the kollel on South Taylor Road in Cleveland Heights where he studied daily, the young men who were studying would stop and rise out of respect, said Cohen’s son, Mair Cohen.
“My father was very quiet, but he was well known and very well liked, as evidenced by the tremendous turnout at a late-night service,” Mair Cohen said. “I never heard him speak about anyone in a negative manner.

Since the contemporary household no longer bakes its daily bread, every sizable Jewish community requires the availability of a local kosher bakery. As a result, one of the innumerable responsibilities of the local rabbinate is to arrange proper supervision of such a bakery. Although in larger communities the rabbonim may insist that they provide hechsherim only to bakeries that meet the highest standards on all levels, in smaller communities there are many challenges that local rabbonim must deal with when deciding whether and how they will provide kashrus supervision.
