Rabbi Yehuda Appel, co-director of Aish HaTorah of Cleveland, said he’s amazed at how the organization has grown since its inception 25 years ago.
“I came to Cleveland expecting to find a couple dozen people who would study with me,” Appel said. “Now when you take in the whole scope of programs, in all different aspects of Aish HaTorah, we have about 600 people who learn with us in any given year.

Jewish Federation of Cleveland Announces Creative Arts Contest Cash award and publication for winners; contest open to middle and high school students
Calling all Cleveland area middle and high school wordsmiths and artists: you are invited to enter the 2016 annual Yom Hashoah V’Hagvurah (Cleveland’s commemoration of the Holocaust and heroism) Contest. Essays and works of art are sought that portray this year’s theme, “Out of the Darkness: Into a New Life.”
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to consider the lessons of the Holocaust from a unique perspective and to creatively interpret that point of view through writing and art,” said Richard Rakos, Creative Arts Committee Co-Chair.

A New York entrepreneur is one step closer to building a kosher grocery store on Mayfield Road in Lyndhurst.
Israel Blackman, who owns an electronics distribution company, bought a 1.6-acre vacant lot from Mark Sims last month for $700,000. A sign has been erected on the property announcing the “glatt kosher supermarket” is on its way.
$10 million gift benefits Hebrew Academy growth

A pledge for a $10 million lead gift to help finance Hebrew Academy of Cleveland’s proposed new school campus on the site of the former Oakwood Club in Cleveland Heights was announced Nov. 16 by Ohio’s largest Jewish day school.
“Our Vision 2020 Capital Campaign is thrilled and fortunate to have been launched with the largest gift ever to the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland,” said Rabbi Eli Dessler, Hebrew Academy’s financial director. “This generous gift will have a major impact in the lives of thousands of students in the years to come.”
