Jewish Federation of Cleveland Announces Creative Arts Contest Cash award and publication for winners; contest open to middle and high school students
Calling all Cleveland area middle and high school wordsmiths and artists: you are invited to enter the 2016 annual Yom Hashoah V’Hagvurah (Cleveland’s commemoration of the Holocaust and heroism) Contest. Essays and works of art are sought that portray this year’s theme, “Out of the Darkness: Into a New Life.”
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to consider the lessons of the Holocaust from a unique perspective and to creatively interpret that point of view through writing and art,” said Richard Rakos, Creative Arts Committee Co-Chair.

A New York entrepreneur is one step closer to building a kosher grocery store on Mayfield Road in Lyndhurst.
Israel Blackman, who owns an electronics distribution company, bought a 1.6-acre vacant lot from Mark Sims last month for $700,000. A sign has been erected on the property announcing the “glatt kosher supermarket” is on its way.
$10 million gift benefits Hebrew Academy growth

A pledge for a $10 million lead gift to help finance Hebrew Academy of Cleveland’s proposed new school campus on the site of the former Oakwood Club in Cleveland Heights was announced Nov. 16 by Ohio’s largest Jewish day school.
“Our Vision 2020 Capital Campaign is thrilled and fortunate to have been launched with the largest gift ever to the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland,” said Rabbi Eli Dessler, Hebrew Academy’s financial director. “This generous gift will have a major impact in the lives of thousands of students in the years to come.”

Once again, the city is asking drivers to avoid the Warrensville Center Road-Chagrin Boulevard intersection, this time during rush hours.
Workers Planting TreeWorkers recently installed a tree along the re-landscaped Chagrin Boulevard at Warrensville Center Road in Shaker Heights.
As the Warrensville-Chagrin reconfiguration project nears completion, lanes are becoming more constricted. Workers are finishing road repairs to prepare for paving.

When it comes to regulations for home occupations, some residents are asking city officials to take into account their motto of “Home to the Arts.”
And while city officials encourage home occupations, they want to ensure that residential zoning restrictions remain intact for neighbors.

Kashrus Alert – Sunkist Trail Mix

At Walmart on Warrensville this morning, in the fruit section to the left of the bananas, my wife and I noticed an assorted display of Sunkist trail mix packs with an O-K symbol. Some of the products in the line listed “milk solids” as an ingredient though there was no “D” as part of the kashrus symbol. We called the O-K hotline and were told that the O-K symbol on the whole line of products is unauthorized – see forwarded message below. Apparently O-K is getting inquiries about this line mostly from the Midwest area and we, and they, thought you might like to put this info into LJN.
