30 Days to Sukkos!

August 30, 2015 Leave a Comment

(Hakhel) HILCHOS SUKKAH! This Sunday, we began the thirty day period prior to Sukkos. Many learn that the obligation to study the Halachos of Sukkos begin thirty (30) days in advance (see Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 429, Ba’air Heitev). Accordingly, we  provide two Halachos here to get you started!  The following two Halachos and are excerpted from the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch (Chapter 134):

1. It is a Mitzvah on every man to be personally involved in the building of his Sukkah and in the placement of his schach. Even if one is a highly respected person and does not usually engage in this kind of activity–he

The Children’s Museum of Cleveland Refines Plans For its New Home of Early Childhood Education

August 30, 2015 Leave a Comment

mansion(Ed: See related story from Cleveland.com dating back to 2014) Plans are underway for The Children’s Museum of Cleveland’s renovation of the historic Stager Beckwith mansion in Midtown. Since purchasing the property in December 2014, the Museum has collaborated with exhibit designers and early childhood stakeholders to create a Museum that brings children and adults together in innovative ways to learn through play. Due to an upcoming commercial redevelopment on its current property, the Museum’s lease is not being renewed. As such, the Museum will close its University Circle facility on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016 and begin to serve the community through a dynamic series of programs held throughout the community until the time when the renovation in Midtown is complete and the Museum is ready to open its new home to visitors.

Increase in Robocall “Calling Post” Business Solicitations

August 30, 2015 14 Comments

phone2Lately a number of local businesses have begun to utilize more Calling Post to make business solicitations to the Cleveland Orthodox Community. While it may seem that LocalJewishNews.com is complaining as this “takes away from our advertising business,” the main concern here is that this type of robocall unsolicited marketing causes much disturbance to families, especially as these calls are being made at a late hour, about 9pm. Furthermore, this type of advertising is illegal and is in violation of very clear FCC (ie government) rules. It is stated clearly under § 64.1200 (see link here) that

(a) No person or entity may:

(2) Initiate any telephone call to any residential line using an artificial or prerecorded voice to deliver a message without the prior express consent of the called party, unless the call: (i) Is made for emergency purposes, (ii) Is not made for a commercial purpose, (iii) Is made for a commercial purpose but does not include or introduce an unsolicited advertisement or constitute a telephone solicitation, (iv) Is made to any person with whom the caller has an established business relationship or (v) Is made by or on behalf of a tax-exempt nonprofit organization.

Kosher Food Bank, in South Euclid, helps feed the area’s needy; organization needs volunteers, donations

August 28, 2015 Leave a Comment

kosherfoodbank(Cleveland.com)

In Jewish culture, performing a mitzvah is doing a good deed.

The Cleveland Kosher Food Bank, tucked away in a small garage-like building off South Green Road, next door to Senders Pediatrics, is a place where many good deeds are done. In a typical month, food to fill 3,000 bags of groceries are collected from the Cleveland Food Bank and through donations, bagged, then delivered to those in need in the area.
