Cleveland attorney and community leader Fred Livingstone will speak on his travels to Tetiev, Ukraine, in the first of two events at which Oheb Zedek-Cedar Sinai Synagogue will honor its Tetiev roots and commemorate the 95th anniversary of the Tetiev pogrom.
The synagogue is at 23749 Cedar Road in Lyndhurst.
At 9 a.m. May 2, a special Shabbat service will be dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the pogrom in 1920. Livingstone will speak at 11 a.m.
Sam Kliger, the American Jewish Committee’s director of Russian Jewish community affairs, will speak at 7 p.m. May 7. His topic is “From Pogroms to Today: Modern Ukraine and its Jewish Community.”
Kliger’s responsibilities include creating, developing and implementing a variety of programs with the goal of successfully integrating Russian Jews into the American Jewish community and general American society. He also serves as a liaison between AJC and Russian Jewish communities and organizations around the world.
Kliger immigrated to the United States from Moscow in 1990 after being a “refusenik” for many years. A dessert reception will follow his talk.
Oheb Zedek-Cedar Sinai traces its roots to the Tetiever shul that was located on Linn Drive in Cleveland and on East 40th Street before that. The synagogue seeks descendants of those who came to Cleveland from Tetiev so they can be recognized at this event.
Both events are free and open to the community. For more information, call 216-382-6566 or email office@oz-cedarsinai.org.
