Volunteers are needed for the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Spring Cemetery Cleanup on Sunday,
September 14 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.. at Lansing Cemetery, 3933 E. 57th Street, Cleveland. All ages are welcome to participate in this community-wide event, rain or shine.
Past Cemetery Cleanup events have attracted hundreds of people across generations and denominations. Preserving cemeteries is considered one of the most righteous acts of chesed (kindness); there is no greater mitzvah than honoring those that came before us.
Volunteers will help rake, prune and beautify the cemetery, and are asked to bring gardening tools such as weed wackers, shovels, clippers and gloves. The cleanup takes place at Lansing Cemetery, a Jewish cemetery established in 1890, which is currently owned by seven Cleveland synagogues.
The event’s co-sponsor, the Commission on Cemetery Preservation’s role in cemetery preservation has been broadening in recent years, with involvement now in the maintenance of five Jewish cemeteries. A recently completed cemetery study is recommending further expansion, and the hiring of a Cemetery Operations Director.
The Spring Cemetery Cleanup is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Jewish Volunteer Network (JVN) and the Commission on Cemetery Preservation (COPC).
