When Rabbi Leibel Alevsky and his wife, Devorah, were sent to Cleveland in 1972 by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson to establish the first Chabad house in Cleveland and eastern Ohio, they could not have imagined how the movement would grow regionally under their leadership.
Today, in addition to the Waxman Chabad Center in Beachwood, there are eight Chabad branches in Northeast Ohio, all led by rabbis who the Alevskys call “official shluchim” (emissaries).

Commuter crisis
Mrs. Goldman* is stuck in a typical commuter predicament. The traffic is not moving, and it is well past the time that she should be putting up supper. She calls the non-Jewish babysitter, Jenny, to apologize for the delay and asks her to find something in the freezer to warm and serve the kids. Jenny finds some blintzes, places them on ceramic cookware and pops them into the toaster oven. That evening, when Rabbi Goldman returns from Kollel, Mrs. Goldman tells him about her frustrating commute home. Rabbi Goldman realizes that they may now have a kashrus concern in their house.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as the Lubavitcher Rebbe, is widely considered the most influential rabbi in modern history.
As his 20th yahrzeit approaches, the Chabad-Lubavitch movement remains vibrant, thanks to Schneerson’s vision, said Rabbi Leibel Alevsky, Chabad regional director and executive director of Chabad of Cleveland, based in Beachwood.

Last night, 750+ Clevelanders gathered in mourning for the three kidnapped Israeli boys. Our hearts broken, we united as a Jewish community in a show of support for the grieving families, and for the state of Israel.
Moved by the memorial, one community member said, “Let us honor the memory of the victims by performing a mitzvah or giving tzedakah and promoting good in the world.”
We hope that you will join us, and others around the country, in signing a letter of condolence for the families of the victims. While we may live miles apart, our hearts are close together. May their memories forever be a blessing.

For those who did not hear of HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, Shlita’s reaction to the tragedy, these were his words after an initial period of silence: “Shezachu HaBachurim, Hashem Yinkom Damam, L’Zechus Gedolah Me’od Vechizuk HaGadol VeHahishorirus VeHakabalos HaTovos Shekiblu Ahm Yisrael B’Zechusam. Zehu Zechus Gedolah Me’od.” HaRav Kanievsky repeated these thoughts several times. (Translation: The boys will merit, may Hashem avenge their blood, on behalf of the great merit and encouragement and tremendous inspiration, acceptances of new good deeds, that the nation of Israel accepted upon themselves – that this should be for the boys a great merit.” )
“Yeisheiv Badad V’Yidom—let one sit in solitude and be submissive” (Eicha 3:28): We should consider–and act upon–something we can now do personally as a zechus for them, whether it be the study of Mishnayos, the giving of Tzedaka, and/or a personal act of Teshuvah.
