Cleveland Memorial for Kidnapped Israeli Teens Tonight

Tragically, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s planned community vigil is now a memorial. Please join us in mourning for the three kidnapped boys. The memorial will be tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Mandel Jewish Community Center (Stonehill Auditorium) located at 26001 South Woodland Road in Beachwood.

Parking will be available at the Mandel JCC and overflow parking will take place at The Temple-Tifereth Israel. No backpacks or large purses, please.

Fourth Annual Kids Pet Show

It’s a summer tradition! Animals of all shapes, sizes, and dispositions can bark, howl, meow, skritch, scurry, and hiss in our wonderful show. Kids must bring a grown-up to help handle the pet, but grown-ups aren’t allowed in without kids! Pets must stay in cages or on leashes. You can start training and grooming right away! Rain date: July 17. Registration required. Please note type of animal, breed (for dogs), and pet name in the “Notes” field when registering.

In Harmony is seeking community members to perform at our next big concert in February 2015.  We know there are lots of talented women here in Cleveland, and we want to highlight you!  We are looking for a variety of artists, both solo and group acts, in the following categories:
  • Vocal Music
  • Instrumental music
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Short film / music video
  • Theater / comedy
  • Poetry
Submissions from women and girls ages 14 and up will be considered.  Please submit a 2-minute video clip of your intended performance to Rachel Covitch.  The top 10 submissions will be called for an-in person audition, and those acts that pass the audition will be awarded their own  5-minute performance slot in the upcoming concert.  We will be accepting videos from July 1st through November 16th, so get those cameras rolling, Cleveland!  We want to see what you’ve got!  Questions regarding performance submissions can be directed to Rachel at rnidich@yahoo.com or 216-382-2743.  Can’t wait to see what kind of hidden talent is out there!

New Data Highlights EdChoice Academic Success

The Ohio Department of Education just released important data related to the EdChoice Scholarship Program. In the past, critics inaccurately compared scholarship student performance to the performance data for the entire public school district, which included the many high-performing public schools. However, the EdChoice Scholarship program is only available to students who attended or would be assigned to a “low-performing” public school. The only accurate way to analyze the data is to compare scholarship students’ performance to those of students in those “low-performing” schools. As predicted, the new data showed that scholarship students generally out-performed  students in their comparison group, in some cases by significant margins.

Cleveland Vigil for Kidnapped Israeli Teens on Monday, June 30

FederationLogoNewThe Jewish Federation of Cleveland is hosting a community vigil in solidarity with Israel as they continue the search for three kidnapped teens. The vigil will be held this Monday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mandel Jewish Community Center (Stonehill Auditorium) located at 26001 South Woodland Road in Beachwood.

On June 12, three Israeli students – Eyal Yifrach, 19;  Gilad Shaar, 16; Naftali Frenkel, 16 – went missing on their way home and efforts are still underway for their safe return. Communities around the world are rallying to show support for the boys, their families, and Israel.

Classes will include- buttons and snaps,hemming, taking in skirtsand pants, and lengthening them for adults and kids and more! Start saving your ripped clothing, frayed blankets, short kids clothing, wide kids pants and all your other to-do stuff that involve sewing! $10 per person for a one hour class! Teen’s abduction hits home for Fuchs Mizrachi teacher

Rabbi Dov Shachor, an Israeli teacher at Fuchs Mizrachi School in Beachwood, has a strong connection to one of the three Israeli teenagers who were abducted by Palestinian terrorists June 12 in the West Bank.

In a telephone interview June 16, Shachor said he was the assistant principal and teacher of Naftali Frenkel, 16, for seven years at Dvir, a school for students in grades one through eight in Nof Ayalon, a small village in central Israel.

We regret to inform you of the passing of  Mrs. Bella Lebowicz, the wife of Mr. Michael Lebowicz. mother of Dr. Yossi Lebowicz, sister of Mrs. Pepi Simon.

The funeral will take place tomorrow, June 27th,  at 9:00am at Berkowitz Kumin.

May the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Ha’Makom yenachem eschem b’soch she’ar avay’lay Tzion v’Yerushalayim

Review Your Brachos on Natural Phenomena

As we are now into the “Natural Events” season, we provide the following pertinent Halachos relating to the Brachos on these events–which serve to remind us that they are far from being “natural”.

The basis for the Halachos below is Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, Chapter 227 and the Mishna Berurah there, the Sefer Shoneh Halachos and the Sefer Piskei Teshuvos on this Chapter in Shulchan Aruch.  We specifically note that one should, of course, consult with his Rav for the final Halacha.  We present the following for an understanding of the issues:

1.      When experiencing an earthquake, one recites the brocha of “Oseh Ma’aseh Bereishis–Who makes the work of Creation”.  It is also permissible to make the brocha of “Shekocho U’Gevuraso Malei Olam–His strength and His power fill the universe”.  Piskei Teshuvos writes that the degree of the tremor is not necessarily relevant, as long as it is clearly felt.
