Susan’s Suggestions for the Elections – Tuesday November 5, 2013 (Updated)

November 5, 2013 Leave a Comment

ballotbo(Click here to download as an easy-to-print PDF) (Ed: Voting suggestions and voting guides are welcomed from other readers too!)

Includes updated information with regard to Issue 80 based on reader feedback and further research.

As always, I offer these suggestions because of the importance of casting an informed vote. For our community to count, our votes must be countable, and we have a responsibility to our greater community and a mitzvah to show up and vote.  Local elections in many ways effect our daily living in an up close and personal way and are therefore just as important if not more so than national ones.  However, unlike national elections, absentee ballot request forms will not automatically be mailed to your home.  Those requests can be made through Board of Elections, or else plan to show up at your precinct on Election Day.

By popular demand, in order to make viewing easier, this guide consists of two sections: The Quick Voting version followed by the Expanded Explanations.

YOU ARE THAT DIFFERENCE!

November 4, 2013 Leave a Comment

Dear Community Members-

In past elections it has been tempting to say that if I do not vote, what difference does it make? But there is really no truth to this in our local elections, in particular this one. So many key positions have been filled by persons who won by at most a hundred or less votes. So many levies have passed or failed just because of a small margin. Orthodox Jewish Community members, we are just that margin in tomorrow’s November 5th election!

Agudath Israel Young Leadership Event in Cleveland

November 4, 2013 Leave a Comment

YoungNight1On Thursday night, several dozen young professionals gathered for an exciting kick-off event of the young leadership committee of Agudath Israel in Cleveland. The event, hosted by Amir and Edna Jaffa, featured Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives Bill Batchelder and Speaker Pro Tempore Matt Huffman. Both elected officials delivered powerful messages about the importance of being engaged in the political process and taking on positions of leadership in one’s own community and beyond. They stressed how each person can make a difference in the school choice effort by publicizing positive effects these policies have had on the local community. The function was an opportunity for participants to personally thank the elected officials for their roles in expanding Ohio’s voucher programs that help many students in Cleveland attend Jewish day schools.

Jewish Federation of Cleveland Announces Creative Arts Contest

November 4, 2013 Leave a Comment

Cash award and publication for winners; contest open to middle and high school students

CLEVELAND –  Do you have a way with words, a passion for painting, or a skill for sketching? Creative writers and artists from Cleveland area middle and high schools are invited to enter the 2014 Yom Hashoah V’Hagvura (Cleveland’s commemoration of the Holocaust and heroism) Contest. Essays and works of art including graphic novel-style comics, paintings, and drawings portraying this year’s theme “Memory of the Holocaust: A Child’s Perspective” are sought.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to consider the lessons of the Holocaust from a unique perspective, and to creatively interpret that point of view through writing and art,” said Richard Rakos, Creative Arts Committee Co-Chair.

Entries will be judged on interpretation of the theme, originality and technique. Cash prizes totaling $2,500 will be awarded and the winning entries will be published in the Cleveland Jewish News. Winners and their schools will be recognized at the Yom Hashoah Commemoration on April 27, 2014.

The Yom Hashoah Creative Arts Contest and the Annual Yom Hashoah Event are sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and the Kol Israel Foundation.

For more information and entry forms, visit www.jewishcleveland.org/YHCreativeArts or call Debbie Klein at the Federation at 216.593.2834.

The Unfair Fare By Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff

November 3, 2013 Leave a Comment

moneyjar Keith RamseyIn this week’s parsha, our forefather Yaakov must learn to deal with a dishonest person, without compromising his own integrity.

(RabbiKaganoff.com)

It had already been a really tough day. Now, on top of that, Mrs. Gartenhaus (all names in this story have been changed) was very unhappy with the cab driver she had hailed. Aside from his discourteous behavior, she sensed a certain shadiness to his personality. She just couldn’t wait to get home and get out of his vehicle.

Linick says we are running deficits.  Gorden claims there is a $6+ million surplus in general fund.
