David Markovich is the guy every student knows on campus. Walking the halls of John Carroll University in University Heights, it’s difficult for him not to run into another student who stops to say “hi” or strike up a quick conversation.
After serving as president of Hillel for three years, working as Student Union senator for the class of 2014 and winning the Outstanding Student Leader Award two years in a row, it’s no surprise that Markovich is so well known.

The Solomon Sefer Torah Campaign
My father in law, Reb Zev Aryeh Solomon, A”H, exemplified all that a Torah true Jew should be. He was conscientious about davening and extremely careful in his interpersonal relationships. He was diligent in regards to learning and kevius itim. From the inception of Kollel Torah Life until his last day, Reb Zev was involved on a daily basis, benefitting from his many chavrusas and shiurim. Mostly, his positive character added to the atmosphere of our community. The vacuum created by his untimely passing will not be easily filled.
In his z’chus, I would like to undertake raising the funds necessary to have a sefer Torah written in his name. Any donation, whether big or small, will help our family achieve this goal.

A. Why does the Torah not identify the kind of tree the Eitz HaDa’as was? Chazal (see Bereishis Rabbah 15:8) teach that it was because Hashem did not want to disgrace this tree forever–as the tree over which the world was punished for thousands of years. If Hashem was concerned about the honor of the Eitz HaDa’as in this way–all the more so should we be concerned with human beings, making sure not to shame anyone in any way. In fact, shaming a person is brought by Chazal as a form of killing him. Moreover, The Sha’arei Teshuvah (3:139) teaches that the pain caused by disgracing another is worse than death.

Reflect on the consequences of walking at night
Just recently a young man was hit by a car crossing a street at night in Beachwood. Despite the fact that he crossed in a crosswalk, it was just too hard to see someone dressed in black at night. At the encouragement of his family, our community is being asked to be more vigilant about wearing reflectors. Sponsored belts can be purchased for $3 at the local seforim stores. Marc’s and discount stores frequently sell very inexpensive reflective vests. Flashing lights and flashlights are only a few dollars. Just recently Lakewood launched a “Shabbos of Reflection” after 101 pedestrians were struck, 5 fatally in 2012. Maybe it is time for a little more “reflection” in Cleveland too? Well, Chaverim has plans underway for a whole campaign soon! Click here to view a pamphlet which outlines the halachos of wearing a reflector in a place where there is no eruv (say you are traveling outside of the Cleveland eruv on Shabbos or do not carry).
