Few Halachos for Selichos and Rosh HaShana
(Hakhel) A few brief notes below from the Sefer Kovetz Halachos: Yomim Noraim by Rabbi Doniel Kleinman, Shlita, containing the pesokim of HaRav Shmuel Kamenetsky, Shlita :
A. One must recite Birkas HaTorah before reciting Selichos.
B. It is better to recite less Selichos with Kavannah, than more without Kavannah–however one should always be careful to recite the 13 Midos together with the Tzibbur.
C. We wash and take haircuts on Erev Rosh Hashanah to demonstrate our faith that Hashem will perform a miracle for us and find us innocent on Rosh Hashanah. Even though one may take a haircut a day or two before Rosh Hashanah, it is still a greater Kavod Yom Tov to take it Erev Rosh Hashana itself.

Walmart – Don’t Give Up on Safety Just Because You Have a Lot of Shopping To Do
Just this past week, a community member was approached by a man in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter in South Euclid claiming to have a gun and attempting to steal her purse. Fortunately, he was unsuccessful and no one was seriously injured. No doubt incidents like this are frequent at this store that could easily have several arrests per day and has shocking crime statistics.
However this incident serves as a good reminder to our community to not take personal safety lightly! At this busy time when there is so much shopping to do, please continue to be careful about safety and consider the following. If you have more to share, please let us know in the comments. It is hoped that schools and shuls and families take the time to share this warning and come up with their own strategies.
- Avoid shopping alone at places like Walmart after dark
- If necessary, consider ways to protect yourself – Panic button on your vehicle’s key fob, mace, or other forms of self-defense
- Voice your concerns with:
We all have a lot of questions. Now you can be part of the answer. Parkinson’s Disease Research.
Ashkenazi Jews carry a gene mutation for Parkinson’s at a much higher rate than the general population.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation is looking for Ashkenazi Jews who either have Parkinson’s, or are 50 and older with a first degree relative who has Parkinson’s. If you meet either of these criteria, and would like to have free genetic testing, please visit www.michaeljfox.org/
If you are found to be positive for the gene, you will receive free genetic counseling and have the option of participating in further study.
