I’m looking for apple cider with a good hechsher for a Rosh Hashanah recipe. Last year Whole Foods had Zeigler’s, which was great. This year they don’t, and I haven’t found apple cider with a good hechsher in Zagara’s, Dave’s, and Giant Eagle either. Anyone have any leads? Thanks a lot!

Please define “good” hechsher.
I don’t think there is any problem with Patterson’s.

Heinen’s has one. I don’t remember the brand name.

Thanks for the responses. I will check out Heinen’s. Neil, I’d prefer a product with a hechsher but will ask about Patterson’s if I don’t find what I need at Heinen’s. Thanks again!

Call Rabbi Gutman 440-347-0264. I believe you can ask the manufacturer/orchard what type of filter they use. Chemical filters need hekshers, manual filters such as a paper or metal sieve do not. I might be mixing this up with honey or maple syrup, so definitely call Rabbi Gutman.

Patterson’s used to be for sure OK, when they made it themselves, as there was nothing else made at the facility. However, if you look at the bottle, it says ‘made for Patterson Farms’, meaning it is not necessarily made there, therefore it may need a reliable hechsher. Consult your local Orthodox Rabbi for a definite answer.

Apple Cider DOES need a reliable certification.
From the OK’s website: “Even “pure apple juice” or “pure apple cider,” with “no artificial ingredients or additives,” may not be kosher. Apple juice is a good example of what may happen to a “natural” product when nature meets technology, so we will explore it in further detail…” www.ok.org/Content.asp?ID=116 . You can go there and see what the issues are and why apple juice and cider needs to be certified.
You can also see www.crcweb.org/juice_list.php
It seems that everyone agrees it needs to be certified.

I was just in Unger’s and they had Golden Flow apple cider. Heinen’s does not have kosher-certified apple cider; they carry Patterson’s, which, as someone mentioned, is no longer made locally.

I apologize. I misread the letter as apple cider vinegar. I am not familiar with any kosher apple cider.
